Vital Strength
Studies the development and restoration of physical capacity through strength, movement, activity, rest, sleep, recovery, and lifelong resilience.
Western Civilization’s Science and Philosophy of the Life Force
Vitalism is Western civilization’s science and philosophy of the life force in living beings, the principle through which life, health, symptoms, what is called disease, and healing are understood as expressions of the lawful activity of nature. It studies the intelligence by which a living being organizes and maintains itself, grows and reproduces, adapts and defends, conserves and repairs, and governs degeneration and restoration, together with the conditions that build, diminish, and restore vitality.
The object of Vitalist health science is the Living Person: an integrated living being whose physical, metabolic, mental, emotional, social, environmental, and historical conditions participate in health and healing.
Chinese medicine is founded on the vital life force it calls qi. Indian medicine is founded on the vital life force it calls prana. The Western healing tradition is founded on the same recognition of a vital principle in living beings. Since Hippocrates, that principle has appeared under different names and formulations, including physis, nature, the healing power of nature, the vital principle, and the vital force.
In modern Vitalism, this life force is Vita. The name is already carried through the language of life itself: vital, vitality, vital signs, and vitamin. Vita is the Western equivalent of qi and prana: the vital life force through which the living organism organizes, maintains, adapts, defends, repairs, and heals itself.
As a distinct medical and scientific tradition, Vitalism took formal shape in eighteenth-century France at the medical school of Montpellier, where a physiology of the living organism grounded in the principe vital, or vital principle, was developed. The name Vitalism emerged from this tradition around the turn of the nineteenth century, giving formal expression to a principle already present in Western healing thought for more than two millennia.
The vital life force acts according to natural law. The Living Person belongs wholly to nature and cannot exist outside its lawful order. Growth, adaptation, defense, degeneration, symptom formation, restoration, and healing are expressions of that order.
Vitalism seeks to understand these laws and the conditions that govern the strength and action of Vita in the particular Living Person.
The Seven Unified Laws of Vitalism give formal expression to the lawful relationships through which life, vitality, symptom genesis, degeneration, restoration, and healing are understood within the field. They provide the natural-law framework for the Institute’s research and for Applied Vitalism.
The Laws themselves are not published on this website. The Unified Laws of Vitalism is presently available only in a limited Private Press edition to current Valeo Therapeutics clients. Wider publication is planned for 2027.
Vitalism directs the science of health toward the laws and conditions governing vitality, degeneration, symptom formation, restoration, and healing. As those laws become understood and the conditions of health become increasingly controllable, disease itself becomes progressively preventable and resolvable.
The Great Work is necessarily generational. It requires the preservation and investigation of the Western vitalist tradition, the continued discovery of natural law, the incorporation of valid advances in modern health science, and the disciplined development of a science capable of preventing degeneration, restoring vitality, and extending healthy human life.

Founded in 2026 by Joseph Dunkley, author of The Unified Laws of Vitalism, the Institute of Vitalism is being established as the nonprofit scientific, educational, historical, and public-benefit home of 21st Century Vitalism.
The Institute studies the history and principles of Vitalism, investigates the Unified Laws, advances research through its Seven Pillars, educates and publishes, and provides the scientific foundation from which Applied Vitalism can develop.
The Institute exists to preserve the Western vitalist tradition, extend its scientific foundations, recover neglected knowledge where it remains valuable, and provide an enduring institutional home for the study, advancement, and transmission of the field.
The Institute of Vitalism is organized around seven foundational domains of inquiry through which the science, history, philosophy, and practical implications of Vitalism are investigated and advanced. Together they form the research architecture of the Institute and contribute to the continuing formation of Applied Vitalism.
Studies the development and restoration of physical capacity through strength, movement, activity, rest, sleep, recovery, and lifelong resilience.
Advances Vitalist nourishment through food, metabolic nutrition, restorative preparations, culinary culture, sourcing, education, and the shared life of the table.
Investigates cellular energy, mitochondrial function, metabolism, diagnostics, regeneration, anti-aging, and restorative approaches that support the body’s capacity to renew itself.
Studies embodiment, structural order, therapeutic bodywork, breath, nervous-system regulation, meditation, temperament, character, and the restoration of inner and physical presence.
Investigates trauma, conflict, symptom genesis, healing sequences, reactivation, and the biological patterns through which the Living Person responds to overwhelming experience.
Develops the principles and practice of human care that protect vitality and create the conditions in which recovery, healing, convalescence, childbirth, aging, and restoration can proceed.
Integrates the Unified Laws and the discoveries of the other six Pillars into the developing science of Applied Vitalism, including Vitalistic Diagnosis, case reasoning, therapeutic principles, and the study of their application to the particular Living Person.
Applied Vitalism is the scientific field that applies the Unified Laws of Vitalism to the particular Living Person. It unifies useful knowledge from Western medicine, osteopathic medicine, functional and integrative medicine, complementary health care, and the broad field of alternative medicine within a single vitalist understanding of life, health, symptoms, degeneration, and healing.
Its field includes naturopathy, chiropractic, osteopathic methods, structural and therapeutic bodywork, trauma healing, nutrition and supplementation, mitochondrial and metabolic restoration, laboratory and diagnostic science, regenerative therapies, and advanced healing and diagnostic technologies. Any therapy or technology capable of supporting vitality, correcting conditions that impair it, or assisting the lawful healing activity of the Living Person belongs within the scope of investigation.
Methods are evaluated by their effects on vitality, function, healing, and the conditions required for Vita to perform its lawful work.
Vitalistic Diagnosis provides the field’s organizing clinical inquiry into symptom genesis, vitality, the Vital Economy, the Living Person, the Seven Vital Requirements, trauma, maintaining influences, reserve, and the pathway toward resolution and healing.
The Institute studies, evaluates, and develops this framework. Clinical application belongs to the field of Applied Vitalism and to practice settings such as Valeo Therapeutics.
The International Society of Applied Vitalism will provide the scholarly and professional community through which practitioners, researchers, students, and serious health seekers examine the field, contribute evidence and experience, challenge its formulations, and strengthen its scientific development.
Its planned work includes the exchange of research and clinical observations, case studies, discussion and fellowship, and opportunities for publication through the Journal of the Institute of Vitalism, creating a record through which the field can accumulate knowledge over time.
This website introduces the Institute and its developing work. Expanded research, education, publication, the Society, and opportunities for participation are planned for the 2027 public launch.
